New R-1 Bus Stop at Plaza Las Américas: 2026 Update

Taking the R-1 bus from the mall back to the Hotel Zone? IMOVEQROO is changing bus stop locations at Plaza Las Américas. Here is where to find your ride right now.

Heads Up: The R-1 Bus Stop at Plaza Las Américas is Changing

If you’ve spent the day shopping at Plaza Las Américas (the big mall downtown) and you’re planning to take the R-1 bus back to the Hotel Zone, listen up. The local transport authorities (IMOVEQROO) are currently reshuffling the bus stops around the mall to help with the 2026 traffic flow.

As locals who navigate this intersection daily, we know how confusing it can get when the “usual” spot suddenly moves. Here is the current deal.

Where is the stop right now?

Despite the rumors of a big move, the R-1 bus stop at Plaza Las Américas is still currently located on Avenida Tulum (the main street right in front of the mall).

Authorities have confirmed they are working on a new “master map” for bus stops this month, so expect some movement soon. For now, look for the crowds of locals and workers on the sidewalk of the main avenue—that’s still your best bet.

Why the R-1 is your best friend in Cancun

If you aren’t familiar with it, the R-1 (Route 1) is the most important bus line in the city. It connects the “Real Cancun” (Downtown) with the “Tourist Bubble” (Hotel Zone). It’s cheaper than an Uber and runs 24/7.

Key stops on the R-1 route include:

  • El Crucero: The busy transit hub downtown (be careful with your pockets here).
  • City Hall (Ayuntamiento): Near the ADO bus station.
  • Plaza Las Américas: Your go-to for groceries, movies, and shopping.
  • Km 0: The entrance to the Hotel Zone (Boulevard Kukulcán).
  • Playa Tortugas: Great for a local beach vibe or the ferry to Isla Mujeres.
  • Punta Cancun: The party center (Coco Bongo, Mandala).
  • La Isla Shopping Village: The open-air mall by the lagoon.
  • Playa Delfines: The famous “El Mirador” with the giant CANCUN sign.

What to expect this month

IMOVEQROO is expected to finalize the new locations in the coming weeks. If you get out of the mall and don’t see the usual line of buses on Avenida Tulum, don’t panic. Just look for the official yellow vests (transport marshals) or follow the flow of people moving toward the side streets like Av. Sayil.

Our Local Expert Tip: If you’re carrying a lot of shopping bags, it might be tempting to grab one of the taxis waiting right at the mall exit. Don’t. They often charge “mall rates” which are double the standard price. Walking two minutes to the R-1 stop will save you about $15-$20 USD.

Stay alert for new signs popping up around the mall, and we’ll keep you posted as soon as the permanent “new home” for the R-1 is officially inaugurated.
