Cancun Sargassum Update: Where to Find Clear Water (February 2026)
If you’ve been looking at the satellite maps lately, you might have seen some brown patches heading toward the Caribbean. It’s true: the 2026 sargassum season has officially started a few weeks earlier than usual.
But here’s the secret the “doom-scrolling” headlines won’t tell you: Cancun is currently the cleanest spot in the region. While places like Tulum and Mahahual are starting to see the first big wave of the year, the Hotel Zone is holding strong with turquoise water.
The “FIFA Effect” on our Beaches
Because 2026 is a World Cup year, the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) and local authorities have launched a “Total Shield” strategy. They aren’t waiting for the seaweed to hit the sand this time.
- The Barrier Wall: There are already 7.5 kilometers (4.6 miles) of high-tech floating barriers installed at key points to divert the algae before it reaches the shore.
- The Navy Fleet: A fleet of 16 specialized sargassum-collection vessels is currently active in open water, intercepting the mats before they can ruin your vacation photos.
The Hard Data (Dato Duro)
- Current Status: As of February 5, 2026, Playa Delfines (El Mirador) and Playa Marlín are reported as “Clean/Low” for sargassum.
- The Tonnage: While over 180 tons have already been collected in the southern part of the state (Tulum area), the Hotel Zone has only seen “trace amounts” that are cleared by hand by 7:00 AM every morning.
- The Forecast: Expect a “High” arrival between March and July. If you are here now (February), you are in the “Winter Window,” which is historically the best time for clear water.
Where to go if the wind shifts
Sargassum is all about the wind. If you wake up and see a bit of brown on the Hotel Zone shore, don’t worry—just head to these “Sargassum-Proof” spots:
- Isla Mujeres (North Beach): Because it faces west/north, it is almost naturally immune to sargassum. It’s a 20-minute ferry ride and 100% worth it.
- Playa Norte (Cancun): The area near the ferry terminals (Km 3-5) usually stays cleaner because the island of Isla Mujeres acts as a physical shield.
- Costa Mujeres: The “New Cancun” to the north is currently showing spotless conditions due to its unique coastal shelf.
